0The Minnesota Housing board of directors recently approved funding for two grant programs addressing homelessness and housing instability across Minnesota. The Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance Program and Homework Starts with Home fund organizations that offer supportive services and financial assistance to households experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
The board approved 19 Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance Program two-year grants totaling more than $27 million, including:
Tribal Nations – $2.5 million to 10 Tribal Nations
Greater Minnesota – $9.5 million to 13 applicants serving counties throughout the region
Twin Cities metropolitan area – $16.8 million to five applicants
Funding will provide about 7,300 households with services and direct financial assistance.
The five Homework Starts with Home grants total more than $5.8 million. Grant funding can be used to secure stable housing for households that include families with school-age children. Funds are expected to serve about 420 households.
“As more and more Minnesota households face housing instability, it’s important to continue connecting families with services and supports that keep them stably housed. This funding continues to be an important piece of that effort across the state,” said Jennifer Ho, commissioner of Minnesota Housing.
The Minnesota Legislature established the Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance Program in 1993 and Homework Starts with Home in 2019. The Family Homeless Prevention and Assistance Program is funded through a $20.5 million legislative appropriation. In May 2025, the legislature added a one-time increase of over $8 million for the program during the 2026-27 biennium. The legislative appropriation for Homework Starts with Home was $5.5 million in 2023. Grantees apply via a competitive request for proposals process.
