Rural Otter Tail County native Dick Stigman, raised at Nimrod east of Perham in Wadena County, was a pitcher for the Minnesota Twins in 1965. That year the Twins played the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, losing four games to three.
Stigman and some of his Twins teammates from 1965 were honored by the Twins the weekend of Aug. 15-17 at Target Field in Minneapolis. The Twins played the Detroit Tigers those three days.
The Nimrod native graduated from high school in Sebeka. The left-handed Stigman came to the Twins in 1962 after playing two seasons with the Cleveland Indians. He had a 12-5 pitching record with the Twins in 1962 and was 15-15 in 1963. Those were his two best seasons with the Twins.
Stigman, who was 6-feet 3-inches tall and weighed 200 pounds, ended his seven-year major league career with the Boston Red Sox in 1966. He had 46 career pitching victories. His brother, Al Stigman, was a star baseball player at Perham.
A footnote: Noted teammates of Dick Stigman with the World Series Twins in 1965 included Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Bob Allison, American League MVP Zoilo Versalles, Jim Perry, Al Worthington, Camilo Pascual, Mudcat Grant and Jim Kaat.
