After one of their best seasons in recent memory, the Perham/New York Mills tennis team will look to retool a bit this season. 

Last season the Yellowjackets lost just one match all season, a 4-3 loss to Staples-Motley in the section semi-finals, after being ranked first in the state and undefeated through the regular season.

After losing seven members of last year’s team due to graduation, including: Alayna Moe, Violet Radniecki, Autumn Branchaud, Morgan Smith, Aubry Zimmerman, Dixie Dykhoff  and Samantha Pederson; Perham/NY Mills will lean on five senior letter winners who all had a big impact on last year’s successful season.

Among the returning letter winners for the tennis team are seniors Kaia Anderson, Bella Huwe, Lucy Wallgren, Miley Anderson and Andi Janke.

In order to replace some of the holes left by graduation, the Yellowjackets will lean on a number of underclassmen this season who could all make a big impact at the varsity level. Among the non-letter winners who are competing for a spot on the varsity level are: junior Cora Wiser; sophomores: Aurora Jabas, Lauren Gjerde, Hazel Dykhoff and Nora Murdock; and freshmen: Lilliahna Klettke, Kenzlee Rodewald and Talya Vandermay.

Head coach Jameson Miller said the goal of the team this season will be to improve each match and learn to compete in their new spots in the line up.

Miller said Fergus Falls and Becker will be among the favorites who will be competing for the top spot in Section 8AA.

Tuesday

Perham/NY Mills swept a triangular at Crosby-Ironton by defeating Pequot Lakes 5-2 and Crosby-Ironton 6-1.

In their match against Pequot Lakes, Perham/NY Mills swept the doubles matches and picked up wins at first and fourth singles to come away with the win.

Kaia Anderson swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, while Lilliahna Klettke won at fourth singles by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

The Yellowjackets won all three doubles matches with the first doubles team of Lucy Wallgren and Bella Huwe coming away with a 6-0, 6-2 win, the second doubles team of Andi Janke and Kenzlee Rodewald winning 6-3, 6-3 and the third doubles team of Lauren Gjerde and Hazel Dykhoff coming away with a 6-1, 6-4 win. 

In its other match of the day, Perham/NY Mills overwhelmed Crosby-Ironton by a score of 6-1. The Yellowjackets once again swept the doubles matches as the second and third doubles teams of Kenzlee Rodewald/Miley Anderson and Hazel Dykhoff/Lauren Gjerde both won by scores of 6-0, 6-0. The first doubles team of Bella Huwe and Lucy Wallgren won 6-2, 6-1 to secure the third win in doubles.

First singles player Kaia Anderson won 6-2, 6-3, Aurora Jabas picked up an impressive 7-5, 6-0 win at third singles, before Lauren Gjerde won 6-1, 6-4 at fourth singles.

Thursday

Perham/NY Mills swept its second triangular of the week on Thursday when the Yellowjackets defeated Mora 6-1 and Big Lake 7-0.

In its match against Mora, the Perham/NY Mills singles players were nearly perfect on the scoreboard as they surrendered just three points to Mora as Kaia Anderson won 6-0, 6-0; Bella Huwe won 6-1, 6-1; Aurora Jabas won 6-0, 6-0 and Lilliahna Klette won by a score of 6-1, 6-0. 

In doubles, Lauren Gjerde and Hazel Dykhoff swept their opponents at third doubles 6-0, 6-0; while the second doubles team of Lucy Wallgren and Kenzlee Rodewald had their work cut out for them with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win at second doubles to secure the 6-1 win for the Yellowjackets.

In the second match of the day, Perham/NY Mills swept Big Lake 7-0 after winning four total matches 6-0, 6-0. 

Kaia Anderson at first singles, Aurora Jabas at third singles, Lilliahna Klettke at fourth singles and the duo of Lucy Wallgren and Miley Anderson at first doubles all won by a score of 6-0, 6-0. 

Also picking up wins for the Yellowjackets was Bella Huwe at second singles, Andie Janke and Kenzlee Rodewald at second doubles and Lauren Gjerde and Hazel Dykhoff at third doubles.
