Main Avenue in New York Mills will be filled with people once again this year for the second annual Welcoming Week Fair, which will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 4-7 p.m. in front of the Cultural Center and public library.
Welcoming Week was created as a national initiative of Welcoming America to bring communities closer together around welcoming values and a sense of belonging for everyone. West Central Initiative is a sponsor of the event in NY Mills as well as 17 other similar events across the region.
“One of the most inspiring parts of Welcoming Week is seeing community members across our region take the lead in creating spaces where people of all backgrounds can connect,” said Ashley Quam, Marketing and Communications Officer for West Central Initiative. “We’re proud to support (these) events across our region.”
Hosted by the City of New York Mills and the NYM Forward organization, the local fair welcomes both new and longtime residents of the community to come together to learn more about their community and get to know their neighbors while celebrating all that the area has to offer.
Organizations and businesses will be present with booths to chat with community members about their services and all that they have to offer. The family-friendly atmosphere welcomes everyone to enjoy some fun, food, games, activities, as well as enjoying spending time with neighbors both new and old.
This will be the second year that NY Mills has hosted the event, but work towards the same goal began earlier in 2023 with the Welcoming Communities Kickoff, which gave the community an opportunity to brainstorm and collaborate on new ways to be as welcoming as possible within the community.
“This is a great opportunity for others to learn more about what local businesses and organizations are doing to help make New York Mills a place for people of all backgrounds to feel welcome and included,” said a statement from the NYM Forward Committee. “This event will be family-friendly and fun, with food, games, and interactive activities throughout the evening. We hope you will join us in making the 2025 Welcoming Week Street Fair a success by attending, participating, and sharing your resources.”
There is no cost associated with this event, just the invitation to community members far and wide to attend, enjoy the fun, and chat with a neighbor.
