NYM to travel to Pillager on Thursday

The New York Mills Eagles fell to 4-12 overall and 0-2 in the Park Region Conference after a busy slate of games that included three games and a tournament in Barnesville over the weekend. 

The Eagles opened the week with a big 3-0 win over Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal, but dropped the next two games and all four games in the Barnesville Tournament.

After falling to Pelican Rapids 3-2 on Tuesday night, the Eagles fell to Sebeka in PRC action by a score of 3-0 on Thursday. On Saturday the Eagles lost all four games at the Barnesville Tournament by scores of 2-0 against Minnewaska Area, Battle Lake, Frazee and Menahga, all of which except for one game was against Class AA teams.

This week the Eagles will host Verndale on Tuesday night, before traveling to Pillager on Thursday night in a pair of conference games.

In a game that came down to the wire in all three sets, the NY Mills Eagles picked up their fourth win of the season on Monday night as they defeated Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal by a score of 3-0.

The Eagles won the first and second sets by an identical score of 25-23, before both teams fought to the very end in the third and final set with NY Mills coming out on top by a score of 26-24. 

Annika Dunrud and Gabi Vaden led a balanced scoring attack last Monday with both seniors picking up nine kills. Alivia Preuss chipped in with eight kills, while Chloe Costin led the way with 17 assists. Talli Schmitz chipped in with 11 assists and added four ace serves in the win. 

Vaden and Dunrud also led the team on the defensive end on Monday night as Vaden finished with a team-high 13 digs, while Dunrud added 11 of her own.

Tuesday

NY Mills came up just short in its bid to knock off Pelican Rapids on Tuesday night as the Eagles fell 3-2 at home. 

After the Vikings came away with a narrow 26-24 win in the first game, the Eagles fought back and won the next two sets by scores of 25-20, 25-16 to take a 2-1 set lead. 

Unfortunately, the Vikings were able to tie the match up at two sets apiece with a 25-17 win in the fourth set to force a race to 15 points in the fifth and final set. In a set that went down to the wire, the Vikings were able to upend the Eagles 16-14 to secure the non-conference win over NY Mills.

Gabi Vaden had a solid game at the net as she finished with 14 kills in the win. Annika Dunrud finished with six kills and Chloe Costin finished with four kills of her own. Talli Schmitz was solid at the serving line as she finished with seven ace serves to go along with 11 assists. Costin finished with a team-high 16 assists, while Vaden finished with 22 digs and Aubree Salo also reached double figures with 13 digs in the loss.
