Eagles fall to unbeaten Cowboys 64-6 in district action

Breckenridge proved why it is one of the top teams in Class A on Friday night as the Cowboys overwhelmed the New York Mills Eagles 64-6.
The Cowboys scored three touchdowns in both the first and second quarters to take a 40-0 lead at halftime, before scoring a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter and a 33-yard field goal in middle of the fourth quarter to take a 57-0 lead.
The Eagles did not give up and found the end zone with just 4:19 remaining the fourth quarter when Creed Mursu found Everrett Ruther on a 35-yard touchdown pass to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Ruther caught the ball near the line of scrimmage and scampered down the field to find the end zone for the Eagles’ first and only touchdown of the game.
Breckenridge added a touchdown with just one minute remaining in the game to come away with the 64-6 win.
Ruther led the team offensively with 14 carries for 66 yards on the ground. He also caught two passes for 42 yards and a touchdown. Finn Roder rushed seven times for seven yards and caught three passes for 23 yards. Gage Brasel rushed one time for eight yards and Mursu rushed three times for three yards.
Mursu was 5-11 for 65 yards with a touchdown and an interception through the air.
Ruther led the team on defense with six tackles, while Mursu and Bergen Roder finished with four apiece. Tony Nicols, Finn Roder, Grady Roberts and Elijah O’Dea each finished with three tackles. Logan Vomhoff, Eli Vaughn and Brasel each had two tackles, while Wesston Simpson, Ryder Davis, Blake Hiltner and Grayson Meyer each finished with one tackle.
Offensively the Cowboys finished with 518 total yards, including 420 yards on the ground and 98 yards through the air.
NY Mills rushed for 81 yards and passes for 65 yards for 146 yards of total offense.
With the loss the Eagles fall to 1-6 on the season and will host Wadena-Deer Creek on Wednesday night in NY Mills. The Eagles currently average 15.1 points per game on offense and give up 26.4 points per game on defense.
WDC is currently 2-5 on the season and average 12 points per game on offense, while giving up 37.3 points per game on defense. The Wolverines have wins against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and Menahga, while falling to Lake Park-Audubon, Otter Tail Central, Breckenridge, Frazee and Parkers Prairie.
Wednesday’s game in NY Mills will kick off at 7 p.m.
The Section 6A tournament will kick off on Tuesday with the semi-finals set for Saturday. The Eagles will likely be on the road in the opening round of the tournament. NY Mills is currently in eighth place according to the QRF, but could catch Pine River-Backus for the seventh seed depending on the outcome of Wednesday’s games.
