The eighth seeded New York Mills Eagles had their season come to an end on Tuesday, Oct. 21 as the top seeded and sixth ranked Breckenridge Cowboys came away with a 48-12 win in the opening round of the Section 6A tournament.

While the loss ends the Eagles season with a record of 2-7 overall, the final score was closer than the 65-6 loss the Eagles suffered at the hands of the Cowboys just 11 days prior.

Breckenridge struck first with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter. The Cowboys scored at the 7:43 mark of the first quarter when Riley Kappes completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Roberts for a touchdown. The extra point was good to give the Cowboys a 7-0 lead.

Just two minutes later, Finn Roder scored on a nine-yard run, but the two-point conversion was no good to leave the score at 7-6 in favor of Breckenridge.

The Cowboys would score five more touchdowns in the first half on a pair of David Erlandson runs, two Kappes touchdown passes and a Kappes 39-yard touchdown run to take a 42-6 lead at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Creed Mursu scored NY Mills’ second touchdown of the game at the 8:09 mark of the fourth quarter to leave the score at 42-12.

The Cowboys scored a touchdown with just 29 seconds remaining the game to end the score at 48-12.
