Mursu captures first place at tournament

Creed Mursu took first place, while Wessten Simpson and Grady Roberts captured runner up honors at the annual Rodd Olson Invitational in Crookston on Saturday.

The tournament wrapped up a busy end of the week for the Eagles after they defeated Pillager 45-29 on Thursday night.

This week the Eagles will host Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., before hosting a quadrangular with Benson, Fertile-Beltrami and Roseau on Friday night.

Thursday

The New York Mills Eagles handed the Pillager Huskies a 45-29 defeat on Thursday, Dec. 11. 

The Eagles dominated the lower to mid weight classes by winning seven of the opening nine matches of the night. In fact, Toivo Mursu, Oakley Kern and Jaeger Zutter picked up three straight pins to put the Eagles in front 18-0. Following a pair of Husky wins at 127 and 133 lbs., Creed Mursu and Dawson Seelhammer picked up back-to-back pins at 139 lbs. and 145 lbs., before Chevy Herron and Tony Nichols won by a major decision and tech fall to pick the Eagles in front 39-11.

Grady Roberts picked up the final win of the night for NY Mills by a fall at heavyweight to make the final score 45-29.

Saturday

Creed Mursu took first place, while Wessten Simpson and Grady Roberts captured runner up honors at the annual Rodd Olson Invitational in Crookston on Saturday.

Mursu improved to 6-2 on the season with a fall over Drew Martin of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the semi-finals of the 139 lbs. tournament, before pinning Vincent Perucho of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley-Nevis in the championship at 5:07 to take first place.

Simpson captured second place at 189 lbs. after defeating Quade Kosmatka of United Clay Becker by a major decision in the quarterfinals, before defeating Cole Julin of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton by a 6-1 decision in the semi-finals.

In the championship match, Simpson fell by a pin to Dylan McMullen of Mahnomen/Waubun to finish in second place in the 189 lbs. tournament.

At heavyweight, NY Mills senior Grady Roberts defeated Hunter Thorvilson of Larimore by a pin at 3:07, before pinning Nolan Dale of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in overtime at 6:28 in the semi-finals to advance to the championship match. 

In the finals, Roberts fell to Marshall Kratzke of United Clay Becker by a fall at 3:24 to finish in second place. 

Also placing for the Eagles was Wyatt Helmbrecht in fourth place at 127 lbs., Oakley Kern in third place at 107 lbs., Tony Nichols in fourth place at 160 lbs., Elijah O’Dea in fourth place at 133 lbs., Dawson Seelhammer in fourth place at 145 lbs., Carlyle Tumberg in fifth place at 133 lbs. and Jaeger Zutter in fourth place at 114 lbs. 

As a team the Eagles took third place with 134 points, trailing just Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton with 194.5 points and Mahnomen/Waubun with 168.5 points in the standings.
