Oakley Kern took second and five Eagles placed at the Central Cass Letterman’s Tournament over the weekend.
The large 30 plus team tournament capped off a busy week for the New York Mills wrestlers who competed in a quadrangular in Morris on Tuesday and hosted a triangular on Thursday night.
This week the Eagles will host Park Rapids Area on Tuesday night, before hosting Frazee and United Clay Becker on Thursday night in a triangular at home.
Tuesday
NY Mills went 1-2 in a quadrangular in Morris on Tuesday night. The Eagles fell to West Central Area 54-18 and Osakis 47-28, but were able to secure a commanding 51-22 win over Morris.
In their win against the Tigers, The Eagles dominated the middle to upper weight brackets by winning eight of the final nine weight classes, with the lone loss coming as a forfeit at 172 lbs.

Thursday
On Thursday night the Eagles hosted Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and Barnesville in a triangular with the Eagles edging the Trojans by a commanding 44-30 score.
Toivo Mursu and Oakley Kern got things going for the Eagles as the eighth graders picked up back-to-back pins at 107 and 114 lbs. NY Mills would drop the next two matches, before Carlyle Tumberg, Elijah O’Dea, Creed Mursu and Tony Nichols went on a four match winning streak to put NY Mills in front 32-12.
Barnesville would storm back and make a match of it late by cutting the score to 32-30, but Wessten Simpson secured a pin at 215 lbs. and Grady Roberts won by a forfeit to put the match out of reach 44-30.

Oakley Kern took second and five Eagles placed at the Central Cass Letterman’s Tournament over the weekend.
Kern opened the tournament as the sixth seed and picked a major decision in the opening round and securing a win in the quarterfinals to set up the NY Mills wrestler against the second seeded Simon Trapp of Valley City in the semi-finals. Trailing 2-0 heading into the third period, Kern secured a three point take down with just five seconds remaining in the match to come away with a thrilling 3-2 decision to advance to the championship match. Unfortunately, Kern fell to eventual champion Derick Jorissen of Central Cass by a 3-0 decision to finish in second place.
Creed Mursu took third place at 139 lbs. as he entered the tournament as the fifth seed, but was able to pick up three straight decisions to advance to the semi-finals where he would face eventual champion Bode Henderson of Northern Lights. Mursu fell by a 6-0 decision, but went on to win his next match in the consolation bracket and secured a 10-0 major decision in the third place match to capture third.
NY Mills senior Grady Roberts took fourth place in the tournament after winning by a major decision in the opening round and picking up back-to-back decisions to advance to the semi-finals. Roberts was leading in his semi-finals match against eventual champion Toby Bryan of Roseau until Bryan secured a reversal at the 1:23 point of the third period to come away with a 3-2 decision over Roberts. The NY Mills senior went on to win his next match by major decision, before falling in the third place match by an 8-4 decision to take fourth.
Also placing for the Eagles was Zeke Geiser who took fifth place in the 107B tournament, as well as Tony Nichols who took sixth place in the 152 lbs. tournament.
As a team the Eagles took ninth place overall with 108.5 points. The champion was Lisbon with 201 points and over 30 teams competed in the tournament as a whole.
