Hotakainen, Tumberg take first in JV tournament

The New York Mills girls wrestlers kicked off the 2026 portion of their schedule with a dual against Osakis and the large Rick Lee Girls Invitational Tournament on Friday. In all, seven wrestlers placed in the varsity and junior varsity wrestling tournament on Friday as the team took sixth place overall. 

Tuesday

The NY Mills girls wrestlers picked up an 18-6 win over Osakis in a dual on Tuesday night. Shauna Geiser, Rachel Tumberg and Ellyanne Ruther all secured pins to help the Eagle cause in the win.

Friday

Sadie Hotakainen and Rachel Tumberg both took first place in the junior varsity tournament, while seven Eagles placed in both the varsity and junior varsity tournament at the Rick Lee Girls Individual Tournament on Friday

Hotakainen took first place at 88 lbs. after securing three first period pins with her longest match lasting just 77 seconds. 

Tumberg took first place in the 124 lbs. junior varsity tournament by also picking up three pins to go along with a tech fall. None of her matches went past the second period with two of her pins coming in the first period. 

Also placing for the Eagles was Natalie Kern who took second place in the 88 lbs. JV tournament, Bella O’Dea who took second place in the 100 lbs. JV tournament, Resa Tumberg who took fourth place in the varsity 106 lbs. tournament, Rose Tumberg who took fourth place in the 124 lbs. varsity tournament and Ellie Lorentz who took fourth place in the 94 lbs. JV tournament. 

As a team the Eagles took sixth place overall with 146 points and finished in front of area schools like Wadena-Deer Creek who took seventh place and Staples-Motley tho took 10th. The teams in front of NY Mills were all larger schools including Brainerd in first with 355.5 points, Owatonna with 239.5, Lisbon with 220, Moorhead with 190 and Thief River Falls with 188 points.
