Otter Tail County, as approved Jan. 13 by the county board of commissioners, has joined the Northern Counties Coalition on a one-year trial basis.

“Of possible benefit to Otter Tail County is assistance from other area counties in the formulation of land use plans and formulation of general policies needed for the protection, sustainable use and development of lands and natural resources,” said County Administrator Nicole Hansen. “Membership, allows area counties to gain a better understanding and consideration of common cultures, similar customs and shared social and economic conditions.”

To accomplish these purposes, the Northern Counties Coalition Board of Directors encourages review and working to resolve conflicting land use policies. Further, the board may conduct other activities to permit, promote and ensure the balanced use and efficient long-term management of all lands.

This, says Hansen, will provide a place where people may live and prosper in a viable biological, social and economic condition. “Lastly, the Northern Counties Coalition will gather and disseminate information while promoting cooperative efforts among county, state, federal, local units of government and regional organizations regarding land use management issues.”

County employees will have one year to see the value of this organization to the residents of Otter Tail County, Hansen said.
