0Izak Schermerhorn has been sentenced in a drunk driving crash that killed 18-year-old Blake Unger just days after the latter graduated from high school last spring.
Schermerhorn was sentenced on Monday, Jan. 12 to six months in the Otter Tail County Jail and up to 10 years of supervised provation after pleading guilty to one count of criminal vehicular homocide, while four additional charges including driving in a negligent manner, driving under the influence and driving negligently while under the influence, were dismissed. He received credit for two days served and successful completion of probation will result in a misdemeanor conviction.
In addition to jail and supervised probation, Schermerhorn was fined $1,000, plus $85 in court fees and was ordered to abstain from non-prescription drugs, complete a comprehensive assessment and follow all recommendations, including aftercare. He must also pay for individual counseling for as long as therapist recommends and attend a Mothers Against Drunk Driving Impact Panel or a similar program.
The charges stem from a May 27, 2025 single-vehicle accident in Bluffton Township when the vehicle being driven by Shermerhorn crashed near the intersection of 370th St and 640th Ave, northwest of Wadena. According to court records, Schermerhorn admitted to Otter Tail County Deputes that he had been drinking the night of the crash and was driving wrecklesly. Unger was pinned under the pickup and died as a result of injuries he suffered in the accident.
