Six wrestlers place at conference meet

Creed Mursu took first place and six wrestlers placed at the Park Region Conference Tournament on Saturday. The tournament was held at Bertha-Hewitt High School and capped off a week that also included a dual against 11th ranked United North Central on Thursday night.

This week the Eagles will travel to Pelican Rapids for a dual against the Vikings on Tuesday, before traveling to Otter Tail Central on Thursday night. 

Thursday

The NY Mills Eagles fell to 11-10 in dual action with a tough 42-22 loss to 11th ranked United North Central on Thursday night.

Carlyle Tumberg and Elijah O’Dea put the Eagles on the scoreboard with a pair of back-to-back decisions at 127 and 133 lbs. respectively. Creed Mursu followed with a win by forfeit to make the score 14-12 in favor of United North Central. 

UNC would go on to win the next four matches by pin or forfeit to make the score 38-12, before Wessten Simpson won by a 14-3 major decision and Greysen Saewert won by forfeit at 215 lbs.

Saturday

Creed Mursu took first, six wrestlers placed and the Eagles placed sixth as a team at the Park Region Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Eagles finished with 100 points with Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie taking first place with 190 points and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville taking second with a score of 150 points. 

Mursu improved to 28-4 overall after he secured a pin over Maddox Vandermay of Pillager at the 3:14 mark of his 133 lbs. match. In the championship match, Mursu secured a 3-1 decision over Wyatt Jares of BHVPP to capture first place. 

Grady Roberts took second place at 285 lbs. as the senior defeated Taylor Ellingson of Benson by a pin in the opening round. Roberts fell to fourth ranked Ryan Peterson of United North Central by a tech fall in the finals to finish in second place. Roberts is currently 27-6 on the season.

Also placing for the Eagles was Oakley Kern who took third place at 107 lbs., Wyatt Helmbrecht who took fourth place at 121 lbs., Elijah O’Dea who took third place at 139 lbs. and Wessten Simpson who took third place at 189 lbs.
