NYM freshman is first female wrestler to advance to state

Shauna Geiser became the first girl in New York Mills history to qualify for the state wrestling tournament after taking second place at the section meet on Saturday.

Freshman Shauna Geiser has become the first female wrestler in New York Mills School history to advance to the state wrestling tournament. Geiser advanced to state after taking second place at 112 lbs. in the Section 6 wrestling tournament in Shakopee over the weekend.

Junior Rose Tumberg pins Millelacs’ Bella Brandt  to secure her third place finish at the second annual BVHPP Girls Wrestling Invite.

Geiser pinned her way to the section championship match by securing a pin in just 23 seconds over Kristin Grewe of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie in the opening round, before pinning Naomi Fritch of Zimmerman in just 44 seconds in the quarterfinals.

In the semi-finals of the tournament, Geiser picked up her third straight pin, this time against Ava Molter of Otter Tail Central at the 3:16 mark of the match to punch her ticket to the section championship. 

Unfortunately, Geiser fell to Teagan Erickson of Spectrum by a 17-4 major decision to drop her into the true second match. However, Geiser secured her fourth pin of the section tournament at the 3:59 mark of the match over Maria Januszewski of Wadena-Deer Creek to capture second place and advance to state.

Geiser will enter the state wrestling tournament, which will be held at Grand Casino Arena (formerly Xcel Energy Center), on Thursday, Feb. 26 with a record of 23-11 overall.

In addition to Geiser, Rose Tumberg also placed at the section meet after she wrapped up her junior season with a sixth place finish and a record of 26-9 overall at 118 lbs.
