Members of the New York Mills speech team recently competed in the sub section meet.

On Thursday, March 26, members of the New York Mills speech competed at the MSHSL 6A West Subsection Tournament. To advance to the Section 6A tournament, students must place in the top nine of their subsection. This year, seven NY Mills competitors qualified.

Advacing to the section meet include:

• Elijah Geiser — Humorous Interpretation

• Payton Lausten — Prose Interpretation

• Owen Johnson — Informative Speaking

• Wolfgang Kawlewski — Humorous Interpretation

• Annabelle Specht — Original Oratory

• Megan Harder — Original Oratory

• Elliana Koshenina — Dramatic Interpretation

A special shoutout to Lausten and Geiser for finishing their subsection careers as champions in their events, to Geiser for earning a “picket fence” score—speech shorthand for receiving a one (the highest rank possible) in all three rounds, and to Kawlewski for giving his best performance (and earning the highest ranks) of his season.

On April 11, these seven students will compete at the MSHSL 6A Section tournament held at Perham High School for a chance to advance to the State Tournament held on April 24-25 at Park Center High School.
