Dave and Jen Schwantes have been honored as Out-Standing Farm Leaders by the Red River Valley Development Association. The Schwantes’, who live in-between New York Mills and Perham, were one of 16 couples from 14 different counties across north west Minnesota who have earned the honor. The couple was selected based on their impact on the farming industry, their service to their community and how they lived and worked to enhance the quality in northwest Minnesota,
Otter Tail County remains in a burning restriction due to dry conditions. Approximately 700 acres of land burned in a Friday afternoon fire just east of Deer Creek. Extremely dry conditions and strong winds made the fire spread quickly across the farm land and trees in the area. The fire sent a large amount of smoke in the sky that could be seen from Highway 10. There were no injuries or structures destroyed by the fire.
High school students created a custom robot at New York Mills. Ten students, an advisor and a variety of guest helpers, have created a robot from a dream into a lean, mean dodgeball throwing machine. The Eagles team have perfected their robot to pick up and throw a dodge-ball into a target. They were just two weeks away from from entering its first completion before the robotic season came to an abrupt end due to COVID-19.

Last Tuesday and Friday, sophomores and seniors went through rigorous health screening. Sponsored by the IMPACT team, Coordinated Student Health, Otter Tail County Public Health and West Central Inititive, this was the first of what the school hopes to become an annual event. The screenings involved chloresteral, blood sugar, blood pressure, pulse and skin damage.
Similar to several area municipalities, NY Mills has grown since 1990. Unlike many of those other towns, NYM had phenomenal growth of 23 percent.The towns population grew from 940 in 1990 to 1,158 in 2000, according to the census report made available to the Herald.
The New York Mills Trade Show drew whopping 540 people for the pancake breakfast with over 860 pounds of food served. With over 1,000 visitors in attendance, the Trade Show proved to be a success for yet another year. The Best Booth Award went to L&L Service and the free night at the Whistle Stop Bed and Breakfast went to Mill Manufacturing.

Church sale will aid starving world. St. Peter’s Lutheran Church is $454 closer to its 1976 goal of $1,000 for World Hunger efforts as a result of a special sale held at the church last Saturday.
Bob Wallace, Lansboro High School boys basketball coach, was one of 45 coaches in the state awarded a 25 year coaches citation at the recent state basketball tournament. Bob is a graduate of the New York Mills High School and was known as “Squeezer” to his many friends here during his high school years. He was the first veteran of World War ll to complete high school here after returning from service.
The 65th annual meeting of the members of the Coop Services Inc of New York Mills and Heinola was held at the high school gym on March 28, 1976, was called to order at 8 p.m. by President Wm. Meyer with 179 members in attendance. Record sales were reported at Coop Services for the year ending Dec. 31, 1975 as total sales were up approximately 10 percent over 1974.

The 39th annual meeting of the New York Mills Coop Creamery Assn. was held on March 29 at the New York Mills City Hall with a good membership attendance. Jeff Tikkanen, President of the Board of Directors, was chairman of the meeting. Business reports were read for the year ending Dec. 31, 1950. The total lbs. of butter manufactured for the year was 450,726.
Special School Consolidation Meeting to be held April 17. Consolidation proposed for 11 districts. All children in the proposed area will be transported into the school in town. There is no building program planned. The State Department states that it will go along with the plan to move a couple of the rural buildings into town and use them on the school grounds.
