When inspiration strikes, a person has two choices—stand pat or float down the stream. Hank Kohler has never been one to stand pat, 42 years after making a trip from East Leaf Lake to the Hudson Bay, he is making a second canoe trip, his time from East Leaf Lake to the Gulf of Mexico. 

The New York Mills fifth graders are putting a whole new twist on using their green thumb. Students in Doug Salo’s fifth grade science class constructed a new greenhouse last fall in the elementary courtyard at the school. The greenhouse was made from two old hoop sheds that Brunswick/Lunds utilized as a testing building during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The students are now growing plants, flowers and vegetables in the greenhouse.

After a two-year hiatus, the New York Mills trap team is up and running again. There are over 40 registered participants in trap this season.

The New York Mills MeritCare clinic may be moving to a more centralized location. The current clinic was built in the 70s to offer health care to area residents. Over time the patient load for the two full-time physicians has increased and the clinic is outgrowing its space. A new clinic is now being planned in downtown New York Mills.

A packed Trinity Lutheran Church of over 500 listened to Russ Bunker direct the Community Lenten Choir as they performed the moving cantata “On a hill too far away.” The choir was comprised of residents from Frazee, Perham, New York Mills, Butler, Richville, Dent and other community churches. The choir later performed to another full-house at St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Perham. 

Chris and Becky Wedde are the Computer Doctors. Beginning the first of the year, the Wedde’s have been up and running their computer company offering services like installation, networking, upgrades and repairs. The Wedde’s can also purchase new systems for interested customers and, of course, install them.

Thursday April 15, 1976

Milton Muckala reports that Gedney’s will not operate the pickle factory in New York Mills this season. Muckala, manager of the plant for the past several years, states that it may be reopened again, in a few years if a need for the type of cucumbers grown in this area should again develop.

Last Thursday, April 8, the New York Mills FFA Crops Judging team traveled to Morris where the team placed first in the Region III competition. Frazee was second. The team is composed of Tim Volkman, Lory Brasel, Scott Anderson and Brian Menze. They now advance to the state contest on April 26.

Waino Paavola, owner of Sportssport in New York Mills received the Gold Prop award from Ken Zimmerman, sales representative from Evinrude outboard motors. Paavola is one of 15 dealers in a three state area to receive this award for outstanding sales of Evinrude Motors. 

75 years ago

Thursday April 12, 1951

Four young people of this community were injured in an automobile accident near Bluffton on Tuesday night. According to reports they collided with a semi-trailer truck on the highway as they were driving towards New York Mills. Injured in the accident were LeRoy Jacobson, Annette Mattson, Dorothy Johnson and Donald Hepola. The car was completely demolished. 

Coach Wayne Keto of the state championship Gilbert basketball team will deliver the main address at the fourth annual Athletic Appreciation night in New York Mills on Tuesday, April 17. Coach Keto will be accompanied by three members of the Gilbert quad, Tom Richardson, Bill Simonovich and Andy Snyder.
