NYM improves to 3-0 with two more wins

The New York Mills softball team has found its offensive groove to start the season as the Eagles outscored their opponents by a 44-9 margin and improved to 3-0 on the season.

After defeating Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal 12-2 on Friday, April 10, the Eagles hosted Menahga in their home opener last week and swept a two game series against the Braves.

This week the Eagles will host Wadena-Deer Creek in a doubleheader on Wednesday with the first game starting at 10 a.m., before hosting Norman County East/Ulen Hitterdal on Thursday in a non-conference game.

NY Mills opened their regular season with a commanding 12-2 win over Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal at the College of St. Ben’s on Friday, April 10.

The Eagles broke the game open with a seven run bottom of the third inning, which was highlighted by a bases clearing triple from Aubree Salo, a fielder’s choice by Rosemary Laudenbach that brought one run across the plate, an RBI double by Bella Huwe and a two-run double by Annika Dunrud. 

The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Abby Berndt hit an inside the park home run to bring two runs across the plate, while Shauna Geiser and Huwe each hit RBI singles. 

Laudenbach picked up the win for the Eagles in the circle as the senior gave up no hits and no runs over 4 1/3 innings, while striking out eight hitters. Berndt pitched the final 2/3 of an inning and gave up a pair of unearned runs, while walking three batters. 

As a team the Eagles picked up 13 hits and were led by Dunrud with three hits and two RBIs, while Aubrey Jabas, Huwe, Taya Koljonen and Salo each picked up a pair of hits.

Thursday

NY Mills outscored Menahga 32-7 on their way to a pair of Park Region Conference wins over the Braves on Thursday night.

In the opening game of the night, Rosemary Laudenbach scattered two hits and struck out eight batters to help the Eagles secure a 15-0 win over the Braves. 

NY Mills wasted little time jumping out to a quick lead as Annika Dunrud connected with an RBI double, before Addy Johnson hit a two-run single to make the score 3-0. 

The Eagles added seven runs on just three hits in the bottom of the second inning when Aubree Salo hit a two-run double, Dunrud brought a run across the plate with a fielder’s choice, Abby Berndt hit an RBI double, Johnson drew a bases loaded walk and Shauna Geiser hit into a fielder’s choice to bring a pair of runs across the plate. 

The Eagles added five more runs in the third inning when Chloe Costin, Laudenbach and Aurora Jabas all hit RBI singles and Olivia Ithivongkham drew a bases loaded walk.

In the second game of the night, NY Mills completed the two game sweep with a commanding 17-7 win over the Braves. 

The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Abby Berndt drew a bases loaded walk, Alivia Preuss hit a two-run double, Addy Johnson brought a run across on a fielder’s choice and another run scored on an error. 

NY Mills brought five more runs across the plate in the fourth inning to make the lead 13-5 when Chloe Costin hit a solo home run, Shauna Geiser hit a two-run single, Aubree Salo brought a run across the plate on a fielder’s choice and another run scored on a passed ball. 

Rosemary Laudenbach picked up her second win of the day, this time in relief as she went 3 2/3 innings and gave up four hits, two earned runs and struck out eight hitters. Berndt started the game for the Eagles and went 2 1/3 innings and gave up five hits, five runs of which four were earned, walked three and struck out four. 

Jabas led the way for the Eagles offensively as she went 3-6 with a pair of RBIs, while Dunrud went 2-3 with three runs scored. Preuss and Geiser each picked up a pair of hits and three RBIs in the win.
