0The Minnesota Department of Transportation awarded grants to nine Minnesota cities Tuesday, April 14, to help plan new ways for people to safely walk and bicycle in their communities.
“Our Active Transportation Planning Assistance program helps cities, counties, and other eligible groups improve transportation safety, curb traffic, spur economic activity and increase Minnesotans’ health and well-being,” said MnDOT Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger. “The goal is to help more people safely walk and bicycle to destinations where they live, work and play.”
Recipients include:
• Aitkin: Community-wide Active Transportation Plan
• Alpha: Regional Active Transportation and Trails Plan
• Benson: Community-wide Active Transportation Plan
• Carlton County: County-wide Active Transportation Plan
• Clearwater County: Multi-community Active Transportation Plan
• Mapleton: Community-wide Active Transportation Plan
• Minneapolis Public Health: Two-corridor Active Transportation Plan
• Parkers Prairie: Community-wide Active Transportation Plan
• Rochester: Active Transportation Synthesis and Implementation Plan
Funded by the Minnesota Legislature, the program offers an estimated $100,000 worth of technical assistance from a consultant, such as developing an action plan and demonstration project. The communities will not receive money directly from MnDOT. Each community is responsible for implementation costs (e.g., for construction) of their action plan.
