NYM falls to Sebeka, Parkers Prairie in PRC action

The New York Mills Eagles improved to 9-5 overall and 5-5 in the Park Region Conference with a pair of wins over Frazee and Wadena-Deer Creek last week. The Eagles also fell to Sebeka and Parkers Prairie in conference action as they gear up for the final two weeks of the regular season. 

This week the Eagles will host Pillager on Tuesday, before hosting Cherry, South Ridge, Red Lake County and Sacred Heart in a tournament on Friday and Saturday. 

NY Mills is scheduled to wrap up their regular season next Tuesday with a Park Region Conference doubleheader against Menahga. 

Monday

On a cold and blustery day, NY Mills’ bats woke up in the third inning and the Eagles never looked back as they came away with a 16-5 win over Frazee.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the third inning, NY Mills scored 10 runs in the inning to break the game open. Finn Roder gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead when he scored on an error, before Grady Roberts connected on a two-run single. Evan Doll, Eli Vaghaun, Henry Oakes and Bergen Roder all connected with RBI singles. Kolston Lofgren collected a sacrifice fly to center to make the score 10-1 and Doll picked up his third RBI of the inning on an RBI single to make the score 11-1. 

NY Mills added five more runs in the fourth inning and outhit the Hornets 19-8 to come away with the commanding win.

Bergen Roder was a perfect 4-4 in the game with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs, while Roberts went 3-3 with three RBIs, Lofgren collected a pair of hits with four RBIs, Doll picked up two hits with three RBIs and Vaughan went 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the win. 

Lofgren picked up the win on the mound as he went four innings and gave up just seven hits, three runs of which two were earned, walked two batters and struck out seven.

Thursday

NY Mills split a pair of games against Sebeka and Wadena-Deer Creek as part of a split doubleheader on Thursday night.

In the opening game of the day, NY Mills fell to Sebeka by a score of 6-3. Sebeka scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings, but the Eagles were able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Everett Ruther that brought Carlyle Tumberg across the plate to make the score 3-3. 

Unfortunately, Sebeka was able to come away with a two-run double and an RBI single, both with two outs to give the Trojans a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. 

The Eagles were unable to get any more runs across the plate and fell by a score of 6-3.

Six different Eagle players collected a hit in the loss, while Finn Roder took the loss on the mound as he went six innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, walking four and striking out six. Grady Roberts pitched the final inning and gave up three hits, three earned runs and walked one batter. 

The Eagles rebounded in a big way later in the day as they picked up a 6-5 extra innings win over Wadena-Deer Creek. 

NY Mills opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Kolston Lofgren and a two-run single by Grady Roberts. Bergen Roder made the score 5-1 in favor of the Eagles in the bottom of the fourth inning when he connected on a two-run single, before the Wolverines began to chip away at the lead with two runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, NY Mills came away with the win in walk-off fashion after Finn Roder led off the inning with a double and Bergen Roder followed with a bunt single. Lofgren was intentionally walked, before Grady Roberts hit a line drive to center field to bring the winning run across the plate. 

Finn Roder led the way offensively with four hits and three runs scored, while Bergen Roder went 3-3 with a pair of RBIs and Roberts collected three hits and three RBIs in the win.

Bergen Roder picked up the win on the mound as he went 7 1/3 innings and gave up 10 hits, five runs of which three were earned, walked one batter and struck out three. Roberts pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up no hits or runs.

Friday

NY Mills fell to 9-5 overall with a 14-3 loss to Parkers Prairie on Friday night. The Panthers scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and outhit the Eagles 17-8 in the win.

All three of NY Mills’ runs came in the bottom of the second inning when Everett Ruther and Finn Roder collected RBI singles and Henry Oakes connected with a fielder’s choice.

Grady Roberts took the loss on the hill as he went 1/3 of an inning and gave up six hits and seven earned runs. Slade Doll came in and pitched 1 1/3 inning and gave up three hits, three earned runs and walked two batters, before Jeremy Kopveiler pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up eight hits, four runs of which three were earned, walked two and struck out one batter.
