Eagles to wrap up regular season Thursday

The New York Mills Eagles improved to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the Park Region Conference with three wins, including a pair in the Park Region Conference last week. The Eagles defeated Frazee 15-3 on Monday, before splitting a pair of doubleheaders against Otter Tail Central and Parkers Prairie last week.

Over the weekend the Eagles traveled to Jackson for the annual Jackson County Central Tournament.

This week the Eagles will wrap up a busy end to their season with a doubleheader against Sebeka on Monday, a doubleheader against Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale on Tuesday and a non-conference game against Browerville at home on Thursday. 

Monday

On a cold and blustery day the NY Mills Eagles braved the elements and picked up a 15-3 win over Frazee on Monday evening. The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning after Alivia Preuss singled to bring one run across the plate and Aurora Jabas hit a two-run triple to put the Eagles up 3-0.

NY Mills would go on to score three more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, as well as six in the seventh inning to come away with a 15-3 win.

Shauna Geiser led the way offensively as the freshman went 3-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs, while Annika Dunrud collected three hits and a pair of RBIs. 

Rosemary Laudenbach collected the win in the circle as she went seven innings, gave up seven hits, three runs of which one was earned, walked two and struck out four batters.

Wednesday

NY Mills split a doubleheader with Parkers Prairie on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-3 win over the Panthers in the opening game of the day, before dropping the second game by a score of 9-4.

In the opening game of the day, NY Mills got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Annika Dunrud hit a two-run double to center field and Chloe Costin followed with a two-run single to put the Eagles in front 4-0. The Eagles added one more run in the fourth inning and a pair of runs in the seventh to secure the win.

Costin had a solid day at the plate as she went 3-3 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs, while Dunrud collected three RBIs and scored a run herself in the win.

Rosemary Laudenbach collected the win in the circle as the senior pitched all seven innings, gave up eight hits, three earned runs, four walks and struck out four batters.

In the second game of the day, Parkers Prairie was able to pump out 13 hits and took advantage of four Eagle errors to come away with a  9-4 win. 

Bella Huwe led the way offensively with a pair of hits, while Laudenbach chipped in with a pair of RBIs. 

Abby Berndt took the loss in the circle as she gave up 11 hits, nine runs of which four were earned, walked three batters and struck out four over five innings. Laudenbach pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits and struck out one batter.


Thursday

A three-run top of the seventh inning left NY Mills in the driver’s seat in the opening game of a doubleheader against Otter Tail Central on Thursday night. Leading the Bulldogs by a score of 5-0, OTC was able to score six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come away with a 6-5 upset over the Eagles. 

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Shauna Geiser fielder’s choice that brought one run across the plate, before Alivia Preuss forced a bases loaded walk to put NY Mills up 2-0. The Eagles scored three more runs in the top half of the seventh inning, before the Bulldogs scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including three runs on an error to upset the Eagles 6-5. 

Shauna Geiser led the way offensively for the Eagles as she collected one hit and one RBI, while Rosemary Laudenbach took the loss in the circle by going 6 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits, six runs of which three were earned, walked three batters and struck out four. 

In the second game of the night, NY Mills came away with a commanding 10-6 win after scoring four runs in both the first and fourth innings, as well as a pair of runs in the fifth inning. 

NY Mills made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the first inning after Bella Huwe connected with an RBI single, Annika Dunrud hit a two-run double and Chloe Costin connected with an RBI double. 

OTC tied the game in the top of the second inning thanks to an RBI single and bases loaded walk and took a brief 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning, before the Eagles blew past the Bulldogs with an RBI single by Aurora Jabas, a bases loaded walk by Bella Huwe, RBI single by Annika Dunrud and a fielder’s choice by Alivia Preuss. 

Dunrud led the way offensively for the Eagles as she collected three hits and three RBIs in the win, while Shauna Geiser chipped in with a pair of hits of her own.

Abby Berndt collected the win in the circle as she went all seven innings, giving up six hits, six runs of which just one was earned, walked five and struck out 11 batters.
