New York Mills High School alum will be one of two new teachers greeting students as they walk through the school doors for the first time this week. ¶ Karli Kawlewski will be returning to her roots this fall as the NY Mills High School alum will be the new second grade teacher in NY Mills Elementary School. A graduate of the University of Jamestown, Kawlewski received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a masters degree in leadership. ¶ This is her first year teaching full-time and she is looking forward to returning to the same NY Mills School she attended as a child. ¶ “I am looking forward to serving the community I grew up in,” she said. “I am eager to meet the kids and get to know them. Once an eagle always an eagle.” ¶ Her favorite memory from attending NY Mills School was being part of the spelling bee, the fourth grade plays, reading all of the Junie B Jones books and winning back-to-back state softball championships in 2017 and 2018 was also an added bonus to attending school in NY Mills. In addition to Kawlewski, Tyler Smith will be joining the staff at NY Mills School this fall as the new music, choir and general music teacher. A graduate of the University of Washington, Smith has taught at a number of locations through the years, including Seattle, Wash.; Fairbanks, Alaska; California, China and Saudi Arabia.
The new music teacher said he is looking forward to the opportunity to get to know the new students and the greater NY Mills area as a whole.
His favorite memory from attending school was any time he was able to make music.
