The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center (NYMRCC) has announced a $100,000 grant from the Blandin Foundation. This grant brings the organization’s Cultivating Community Capital Campaign to more than 75 percent committed toward its $2.3 million goal, representing significant momentum toward preserving and expanding this important community resource.
For more than 30 years, the Cultural Center has been more than just a building. It’s been a place where neighbors gather, ideas are shared, and art helps people see each other—and themselves—a little more clearly. Now, thanks to this grant from the Blandin Foundation, this cherished space is one step closer to a new chapter.
The grant supports the renovation and expansion of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center as part of the Blandin Foundation’s Rural Placemaking Program in rural Minnesota. The project will create more accessible, welcoming, and flexible spaces for arts, learning, and community connection while strengthening the long-term future of the Cultural Center’s historic 1885 building.
“Research tells us that, when communities have places where people can gather and learn more about themselves and each other, relationships thrive and community-created solutions emerge,” said Mary Magnuson, rural placemaking program officer at Blandin Foundation. “NYRCC has long been that space, and this project ensures it can continue to be for years to come.”
This grant was part of the Blandin Foundation’s 2026 Rural Minnesota competitive grant round. Awards focused resources on community wealth-building initiatives that retain and grow assets locally to create long-term community wealth, and rural placemaking initiatives that build community connection and inspire joy, create welcoming public spaces and experiences, and celebrate local culture and identity.
“We are deeply grateful for the Blandin Foundation’s support at this important point in our campaign,” said Executive Director Betsy Roder. “This building has held so many stories over the years, and it means a lot to our community to care for it well and make sure it continues to serve future generations. We’re excited about what these improvements will make possible for our community and the region.”
The Cultivating Community Capital Campaign includes two phases of improvements to the Cultural Center. Phase I, Windows to the Future, is currently underway and includes replacement of the deteriorating upper-level windows, as well as the historic storefront windows and doors, with custom-designed, energy-efficient Low E² Energy Star units. The project is improving the building’s energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability while preserving its historic character.
Phase II, Expansion, includes an addition to the building with improved accessibility, including an elevator, expanded community gathering and programming spaces, arts education space, meeting room, accessible restrooms, and a coffee shop. The organization is currently preparing for Phase II construction, which is planned to begin in October if financial goals are met.
The Cultural Center will remain open throughout construction, with regular programming including concerts, classes, exhibits, artist residencies, and community events. During Phase I construction, visitors should use the building’s back entrance, which also provides access to the Cultural Center’s accessible ramp.
The Cultivating Community Capital Campaign represents a significant reinvestment in the Cultural Center and in downtown New York Mills. By improving the building’s accessibility, sustainability, functionality, and long-term stewardship, the project will help ensure that the Cultural Center can continue serving as a regional hub for creativity, community vitality, and lifelong learning in the arts.
As the campaign moves forward, NYMRCC invites community members and supporters to be part of shaping what comes next through giving, sharing the campaign story, providing input, volunteering, or visiting the Cultural Center.
