Eagles fall to Bulldogs 28-6 to drop to 0-2 on the season

The New York Mills Eagles fell to 0-2 on Friday afternoon in a game that was much closer than the final score may have indicated.
The Eagles trailed just 8-6 in the fourth quarter to the Otter Tail Central Bulldogs, after Creed Mursu connected on an eight-yard touchdown pass to Carlyle Tumberg just two minutes into the third quarter. Unfortunately, after holding the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for over two quarters of action, Tristan Laughry scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a pair of late scores to put the game on ice and have NY Mills a 28-6 loss. In fact, NY Mills trailed by just one possession at 16-6 with just over 5:30 remaining in the game, before OTC found the end zone on their final two possessions.
The defenses of both teams played well throughout the contest as NY Mills was held to 2-11 on third downs and just 1-6 on fourth downs, while OTC was just 3-11 on third downs and 2-6 on fourth downs.
The Eagles offense held OTC to just 279 yards of total offense, including just 58 yards through the air.
NY Mills was led offensively by Everett Ruther as he gained 57 yards rushing on 15 attempts, while Tony Nichols rushed two times for two yards. Creed Mursu rushed seven times of -49 yards. Mursu led the team in passing by going 10-19 for 112 yards, including one touchdown and one interception.
Nichols caught four passes for 91 yards, while Carlyle Tumberg caught two passes for 10 yards and a touchdown, Trygg Roder caught one pass for 10 yards and Jacobey Wilhelmi caught one pass for eight yards.
On defense Ruther and Roder led the way with nine tackles apiece, while Logan Vomhoff and Elijah O’Dea finished with eight tackles apiece and Nichols finished with five.
This week the Eagles will travel to Parkers Prairie to take on the 0-2 Parkers Prairie Panthers. The Panthers fell to Upsala-Swanville Area 30-8 in the regular season opener and 7-6 to Breckenridge on Saturday.
September 3
NY Mills came out on the short end of a 33-0 loss to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in their regular season opener on Thursday, Sept. 3. The Jaguars came out of the gates on fire as they scored a pair of touchdowns through the air, just one minute apart in the first quarter, before adding another touchdown on the ground with just 1:13 remaining in the opening quarter of action to take a 19-0 lead.
The Eagles held BBE scoreless in the second quarter, before the Jaguars struck again with two more touchdown passes to take a 33-0 lead.
Both teams were unable to find the end zone in the fourth quarter to leave the score at 33-0.
BBE did most of its damage through the air as they accumulated 197 yards of passing, compared to just 97 yards on the ground. NY Mills finished with 113 yards rushing and 72 yards through the air.
Creed Mursu went 8-18 passing in the game for 72 yards and a pair of interceptions.
On the ground, Everett Ruther rushed 13 times for 73 yards, while Ryder Davis rushed seven times for 27 yards. Tony Nichols added five yards on two carries, Creed Mursu rushed seven times for two yards and Logan Vomhoff rushed one time for zero yards.
Nichols caught five passes for 59 yards to lead the way for NY Mills, while Carlyle Tumberg caught one pass for six yards and Jacobey Wilhelmi caught one pass for six yards.
Defensively, Mursu and Ruther finished with seven tackles apiece to lead the way.
