The New York Mills Lions Club partnered with the Detroit Lakes Lions on Friday to deliver a full day of KidSight vision screenings for area students, marking one of the largest collaborative screening events in the region this year. Together, volunteers screened approximately 730 students, offering families an important early look at potential vision concerns that can affect learning and development.

KidSight screenings use a quick, non-invasive camera system to detect early signs of vision issues. The program is part of Lions KidSight USA, a nationwide initiative focused on children’s eye health and early intervention.

Of the students screened, 67 were referred for follow‑up with an eye‑care professional. The referrals included:

• 33 students in Kindergarten through sixth grade

• 34 students in grades 7-12

Local Lions volunteers say the numbers underscore the importance of regular vision checks, especially for children who may not yet recognize or communicate that they are having difficulty seeing.

“This is exactly why KidSight matters,” said members of the New York Mills Lions Club. “Early detection can make a tremendous difference in a child’s classroom experience. We’re grateful to the Detroit Lakes Lions for partnering with us and to the schools for welcoming this service.”

The Lions Clubs plan to continue offering screenings throughout the school year and encourage families to follow up on referrals to ensure students receive any needed care.
