Veteran residents and spouses at the Minnesota Veterans Homes – Fergus Falls Campus were recently presented with a beautiful bench made from recycled plastic bags collected by the club.

“The bench will be a wonderful addition to our Home and will be placed in one of several shaded areas where residents often visit with family and friends,” said Gary Harris Jr., Public Affairs at the Home. “With the unusually warm fall, residents have enjoyed spending time outdoors, so the bench will be put to use immediately.”

Partnering with Trex Recycling Program in Fargo ND, the Ottertail Lions Club collected 1,000 pounds of dry plastic film, including grocery and produce bags, newspaper sleeves, shipping envelopes, bubble wrap, and plastic wrap to produce the bench. One thousand pounds of these types of plastics is equivalent to approximately 81,000 grocery bags. Once that milestone was reached, which took the Club approximately one year of collecting, they were then eligible to receive a recycled composite bench from Trex. This bench donated is one of three they have received from Trex.

Efforts like this help keep plastic out of landfills and waterways while promoting recycling education and community involvement. The donated bench also provides a welcoming place for Veterans Home residents to relax, serving as a lasting reminder of what can be accomplished through a shared environmental commitment.

The Ottertail Minnesota Lions Club supports the community through service projects, fundraising, and donations that benefits local residents, organizations, and community programs. The club also promotes volunteerism, environmental stewardship, and support for veterans, families, and individuals in need.
