The New York Mills Eagles improved to 4-4 overall with a pair of wins last week.
On Tuesday the Eagles defeated Sebeka by a score of 2-0, before edging South Ridge on Friday night by a score of 5-2. The Eagles also fell to Cherry by a score of 9-5 on Friday afternoon.
In addition to their three completed games, the Eagles were leading Otter Tail Central by a score of 8-1 in the top of the fifth inning when the game was suspended due to inclement weather. The game will be completed at a later date.
Tuesday
NY Mills picked up an important Park Region Conference and Section 5A win on Tuesday as the Eagles defeated Sebeka by a score of 2-0. The Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning when the Sebeka pitcher was called for a balk with two outs to bring Braxton Ehnert across the plate.
Just one inning later, Dashaun Robinson made the score 2-0 when he connected on a one out single to bring Teagan Lausten across the plate to make the score 2-0, which is where the final score would end.
Sebeka did have a chance to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning when a pair of one out walks left runners on first and second base. However, the Eagles buckled down and stranded both runners on the base paths.
Offensively the Eagles were led by Lausten who went 2-3 with a run scored at the plate, while Sam Kopveiler picked up the win on the hill as he went three innings and didn’t give up a hit.
Friday
NY Mills hosted Cherry, South Ridge and Ashby on Friday as all four teams played three games each at Smith Park.
The Eagles opened the day with a heartbreaking 9-5 loss to the Cherry Tigers.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Bode Roberts hit an RBI single with two outs to make the score 1-1.
Cherry retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a three-run home run to make the score 4-1. The score would remain that way until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Eagles took a brief 5-4 lead thanks to a two-run single by Blake Unger, a Cherry error that tied the game at 4-4 and a Teagan Lausten double that brought Finn Roder across the plate to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.
The Tigers clawed back into the game in the top of the seventh inning when the opening three hitters of the inning reached base as they quickly tied the game back at 5-5. Following an intentional walk to load the bases, the Tigers scored a pair of runs on a single and an error to make the score 7-5. They added two more runs in the inning to take a 9-5 lead, which would also be the final score.
Isaac Kawlewski took the loss on the mound as he went six innings and gave up nine hits and six earned runs.
In their second game of the day, Robinson was brilliant on the mound as the Eagles came away with an impressive 5-2 win. Robinson struck out 10 hitters in 6 2/3 innings and gave up just one earned run and six hits. He didn’t walk a batter.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, the Eagles went on a two out rally to take the lead for good when Teagan Lausten hit a two out double to bring Grady Roberts across the plate, before Sam Kopveiler followed with an RBI single and Bode Roberts made it three straight hits with an RBI double to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Eagles.
NY Mills added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Bode Roberts hit a sacrifice fly and Robinson hit an RBI single to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Eagles. South Ridge added a run in the top of the sixth inning, but would get no closer as the Eagles came out on top by a score of 5-2.
Lausten led the way offensively for NY Mills as he went 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
