This past week the New York Mills Eagles cross country team began the year by running in two meets. They were in Staples on Monday and Thursday they hosted their own meet.

On Monday the Eagles got their first taste of competing as they headed to Staples. Maggy Weller was the first Eagle to finish the girls race followed by Audrey Weller who ran in her first cross country meet.

For the boys, Elijah Geiser was the top NY Mills runner with Dawson Seelhammer and Austin Geiser also finishing the race.

On Thursday the Eagles hosted their own meet out at Sonneberg Trails just north on NY Mills.

In the boys race, Elijah Geiser took second place while Jacob Thorsrud came in third. This was Thorsrud’s first ever cross country meet. Dawson Seelhammer placed fifth and Austin Geiser took sixth.

For the girls, Maggy Weller took 10th place while Audrey Weller came in 11th.

After the first week of competitions, coaches Heidi Dresser and Greg Esala were pleased with what all the runners have accomplished.

“Each one of our athletes is working hard to improve and we expect them to have more success as the season continues,” they said.

This Tuesday the NY Mills runners head to Whitetail Run Golf Course in Wadena to compete in the 10th annual Johanna Olson Memorial Meet.
