The New York Mills Junior High knowledge bowl team from New York Mills had mixed results from their three teams that participated on October 11.

As usual, the meet was held in Fergus Falls. This week’s event had teams from Battle Lake Campbell-Tintah, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Ulen- Hitterdahl and Underwood. The team consists of a great mix of seventh and eighth graders, many that are in their first season of competing.

Coach Will Grieger surprised the competitors at the venue by taking the 13 and splitting them into three teams instead of the two that they had been practicing in.

“I was proud that the kids were willing to split up and make an extra team. The main reason was so  everybody could participate. They did a great job,” said Grieger

Team one, New York Mills Nickel was slow to start in the written round getting a start in 13th place. Throughout the day they got themselves up to 11th, but a weak final round had them settle back to 13th place.

“There’s many things we can work on but I think we did okay for our first meet,” said Greyson Saewert.

“I’m glad I got to come and I look forward to the next meet,” said Isabella Felix.

Team two known as New York Mills Navy had the strongest written round of the three teams and they began the day in sixth place. They slowly slipped through the day and ended in ninth place.

Team three New York Mills neon started the day in 10th place after the written round but with some epic oral round scores of 14 and 10 they clawed their way to third place by the end of the day and received ribbons. They also received the moving on up award for highest upward placing move.

Anastasia said, “our teamwork makes the dream work, the coach may have helped a little bit.”

The four team members also wanted to be noted that they had four team members. The other teams placing first and second had six people on their team during written and five during the oral rounds. The knowledge bowl team’s next team event is November 1.
