NYM wrestlers compete at first section meet

Shauna Geiser was one of two New York Mills wrestlers to finish in fourth place at the multi-section meet at St. Michael-Albertville over the weekend.
The New York Mills girls wrestling team competed in the Section 5-6 MSHSL Section Tournament this past weekend at St. Michael Albertville High School.
Only the top two place winners in each weight class advanced to the state tournament at the Xcel Center in St. Paul. It was the first time ever that NY Mills had girls compete in the section tournament. The participants were Rachel Tumberg at 106 lbs., Shauna Geiser at 112 lbs., Rose Tumberg at 118 lbs. and Makya Oehrlein at 130 lbs. These ladies battled in brackets over two days ranging from 15-23 girls. Their attitude, grit, and efforts made their coaches, parents and the NY Mills wrestling family proud.
The girls wrestling program had a lot of firsts this season including their first section win (Rose), their first section place winners (Rachel and Shauna fourth place), and our first ever dual meet win on the boys team (Makya ).
At the multi-section tournament, Rachel Tumberg opened her tournament with a pin over Amarya Fredericks of Eden Prairie a the 2:58 mark of her 106 lbs. match. She advanced to the semi-finals with a pin over Leah Connolly of Spectrum at the 4:33 mark of her quarterfinals match.

In the semi-finals Rachel fell to Ava Schultz of St. Michael-Albertville by a pin in 44 seconds to drop to the consolation bracket, where she quickly picked up a pin over Kaylee Tessman of Ortonville in just 44 seconds to advance tot he third place match.
She would go on to fall to Braylee Ness of Sauk Rapids-Rice by a 17-13 decision to end her multi-section tournament in fourth place.
Shauna took fourth place at 112 lbs. after she advanced to the semi-finals behind a pin and tech fall in the opening two rounds of the tournament. Unfortunately, Shauna fell to Olivia Browen of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville by a pin in 30 seconds to drop to the consolation bracket.

Shauna came away with another pin, this time over Josie Kurasz of St. Michael-Albertville at the 5:49 mark of her match to advance to the third place match. She would go on to fall to Lauren Anglin of Annandale by a pin to end her season in fourth place and with a record of 16-7.
Also competing for the Eagles was Rose Tumberg and Makya Oehrlein.
Girls wrestling is the fastest growing high school sport in the nation, and the Eagle ladies are making their mark.
