Bren Salo was honored for his 100th career win as the Eagles swept a home triangular against Osakis and Park Rapids on Tuesday night. Salo secured the milestone with a win over Pelican Rapids on Friday, Dec. 3.
In addition to Tuesday’s triangular, the Eagles also competed in the 28 team Jackhammer Invitational at Pequot Lakes over the weekend. Four Eagles placed in the top six overall, including Dane Niemi who placed fourth.
The Eagles will now have an extended break from action as they will not return to the mat until Jan. 4, 2022 when the travel to Staples-Motley for a triangular against the Cardinals and Wadena-Deer Creek.
Tuesday
NY Mills dominated the upper weights on Tuesday night as the Eagles blew past Osakis and Park Rapids to sweep a triangular at home. In their match against Osakis, the Eagles trailed by a score of 21-9 after the 138 lbs. match, before wining seven of the final eight matches of the night by either fall or forfeit to come away with a 51-27 win.
Among the Eagles winning a match was Creed Mursu by a 9-3 decision at 113 lbs., Jay Mindermann by a fall at 132 lbs., Simon Snyder by a fall at 145 lbs., Dane Niemi by a fall at 160 lbs. and Bode Roberts by a fall at 182 lbs.
Hunter Rust, Mason Unger, Broeden Peterson and Sawyer Wedde all won by forfeit.
In their match against Park Rapids, the Eagles stared down a 30-0 score following the 138 lbs. match, before outscoring the Panthers 39-6 heading down the stretch to come away with a 39-36 win.
Snyder got the Eagles on the scoreboard at 145 lbs. when he secured a pin at the 49 second mark of his match. DaShaun Robinson win by an 8-6 decision over Andrew Johanning at 152 lbs. to make the score 30-9 in favor of Park Rapids.
Following an open weight at 160 lbs., the Panthers secured a pin at 170 lbs. to essentially put the Eagles backs against the wall as they trailed 36-15.
Bode Roberts gave NY Mills some life as he secured a pin at 182 lbs. and Bren Salo secured NY Mills’ come-from-behind win as he won by fall over Tristan Hill in the first period at 220 lbs. to make the score 36-33 in favor of Park Rapids. Since the Panthers were open at 285 lbs., the Eagles won the match by a score of 39-36.
In addition to the pair of wins, Salo was honored for picking up his 100th career win earlier in December.
Saturday
Four Eagles placed in the top six overall at the 28 team Jackhammer Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Pequot Lakes.
Dane Niemi led the way with a fourth place finish at 152 lbs. The senior opened up his tournament with two straight pins and a decision to advance to the semi-finals. He fell to Brady Kasptrick of Thief River Falls to drop to the consolation bracket. He advanced to the third place match with an 8-6 win over Ethan Bowman of Crookston, but fell to John Paul Fitzpatrick of Crosby-Ironton by a 5-1 decision to finish in fourth place.
Simon Snyder took fifth place when he defeated Ethan Lane of Thief River Falls by a 5-1 decision at 145 lbs. After falling in the second round of the tournament, Snyder had a busy two days as he went 6-2 in the tournament with both losses coming to Dillon Browen of Big Lake.
Bode Roberts also finished in fifth place as he defeated Trey Tuchtenhagen of Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus by a major decision in the fifth place match. He also had a busy tournament as he fell in the second round of the tournament and worked his way back through the consolation bracket. He went 6-2 in the tournament.
Bren Salo finished in sixth place at 195 lbs. when the senior fell to Declan Crumley of Albany by a medical forfeit.
Hunter Rust took sixth place as he fell to Miigwen Tuchel of Rock Ridge Virginia Area by a pin in the fifth place match at 170 lbs.
