Large snowstorm blankets area 100 years apart

February hasn’t traditionally been a snowy month—unless of course the year ends in ’22. Almost 100 years to the day after a snowstorm dropped over 13 inches of snow in Fergus Falls, schools and businesses closed last week as another snowstorm blew through Otter Tail County.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, N.D., 13.2 inches of snow fell from Feb. 20-23, 1922. Though the National Weather Service said just 9 inches of snow fell in Deer Creek from Feb. 20-22, 2022, strong winds and drifting snow made it seem like much more snow fell in the area. While February is notorious for cold temperatures, it is not necessarily synonymous with large snow falls.
“In February it is rare to have those bigger amounts that’s for sure,” said a representative from the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, N.D. He went on to say it was pretty unique to have two snowstorms of such magnitude 100 years apart.
A representative from the National Weather Service said the largest snowstorms typically occur in March and April.
