She attended country school then New York Mills High School and graduated with the Class of 1946. On May 11, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harold Windels at the Evangelical Lutheran Church; a marriage that lasted 69 years until his death in 2017. Six children were born of this marriage: Ronald, Sharon, Carol, Randy, Steve, and Jennifer. After raising her own children, she was very involved in the lives of her grandchildren. Harold and Jane farmed several years in the Mills area, then purchased the Standard Oil gas stations in New York Mills and Wadena and moved their young family to town in 1955. In 1963 they sold the stations and purchased the Windels family farm in Blowers Township, rural Sebeka, and operated a dairy farm for a number of years. In 1979 their son Randy took over the family farm and they built their retirement home nearby and lived there until moving back to Mills in 2009.

Jane took pride in her garden and spent many years creating and selling her handmade crafts, many of which are still on display in many homes. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, LWML, and a Life Member of the VFW Post 3289 Ladies Auxiliary. She belonged to Bluebirds Homemakers Club for many years, and she and Harold were also members of Card Club, playing cards with friends and family. They cherished the times they had with Marge and Harold Anderson and with Harley and Verna Windels, creating many memorable family stories.

Jane is survived by five of her children: Ronald (Carol), Sharon, Carol McDaniel, Steven (Pam Doebbeling), and Jennifer; her daughter-in-law Brenda Windels; 13 grandchildren: Julie, Jill, Holly, Justin, Greg, Susie, Hailey, Andy, Tucker, Aaron, Aleda, Erika and Katelyn; 21 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren; her brothers Roger (Chub) Frost and Dan Frost, and her sister Joan (Annie) Hess.
