0To the Editor,
New York Mills Area Food Shelf Thanks Teachers, Students and Parents.
We are reminded once again what a wonderful community we have in New York Mills. In November, students from the school participated in a food drive called Fill the Yeti, sponsored by Leighton Media, J & K Marine, Builders First Source and Bremer Bank in Perham. We hear Mrs. Weller’s Kindergarten class won a pizza party for being the biggest givers.
Thanks also to the St. Peter’s Church Youth Group that held a food drive in the community. Between these two student groups, the Food Shelf received more than 600 pounds of food and additional funds for our grocery sourcing program.
We are also grateful to the churches, Mills Market, groups and individuals who think about the food shelf and donate goods and funds year around.
We are now serving around 60 families and individuals each month, which is about a 20 percent increase over 2023. Our volunteers give more than 60 hours of time each month to make sure the food is ordered, shelves stocked and neighbors welcomed and helped at our open house each month.
We wish to remind everyone who is feeling food insecurity at this time of year. Our December open day will be one week earlier, on Monday, Dec. 23, so no family need to go hungry on Christmas Day.
